A series of photos showing the new #1 axle, and wheel hub liners being fabricated. The axle is turned to a bearing surface for some distance inside the wheel fit, this turned surface forming the journal box bearing. To reduce friction and provide a means for taking up the wear due to the lateral motion of the engine, which causes the driving boxes to bear against the hubs of the wheels, the inside of the hubs of the wheels are usually fitted with brass liners. |
